Sights in Maastricht

Centuries-old churches, charming squares, city gates, and even complete underground tunnel systems: there is plenty to discover in Maastricht. Many well-known sights are located right in the historic center, but special places await outside of it as well.

Where do you start when there is so much to see? Fortunately, a large number of Maastricht's famous sights are within walking distance of each other. During a walk through Maastricht, you will therefore naturally pass by various highlights.

Vrijthof

The Vrijthof is perhaps the most famous square in Maastricht. Historic buildings, cozy terraces, and major events such as André Rieu and Magisch Maastricht ensure that there is almost always something going on here. Moreover, you will find two of the city's most famous churches right on the square.

St. Servatius Basilica and St. John's Church

The Basilica of Saint Servatius and the Church of Saint John stand right next to each other. The centuries-old basilica is closely linked to the history of Maastricht, while the striking red tower of the Church of Saint John immediately catches the eye.

Market and Town Hall

Another well-known square is the Markt, with the stately Maastricht City Hall as a focal point. Around the square you will find shops, cafes, and terraces, and on market days, the stalls fill a large part of the Markt.

Cobblestones, historic facades, and cozy terraces give the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein its characteristic atmosphere. On the square stands the Basilica of Our Lady, known for its robust appearance, and the Chapel of the Star of the Sea.

Dominican Bookstore

A bookstore as a tourist attraction? In Maastricht, it certainly is. Bookshop Dominicanen is housed in a centuries-old Gothic church. Between the high vaulted ceilings and historical details, towering bookshelves filled with reading material now stand.

Helpoort

The Helpoort is the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands and is a reminder of Maastricht's medieval fortified past. From here, you can easily walk on through the Jekerkwartier or towards the City Park.

Saint Servatius Bridge

The historic Sint-Servaas Bridge connects the center of Maastricht with Wyck. Walk across the stone bridge and be sure to look around: from the bridge, you have a beautiful view of the Maas and both sides of the city.

Some of Maastricht's most special places are completely invisible above ground. Beneath the city and the surrounding hills lies a hidden world of tunnels and stories.

In the Casemates, you walk through underground passages that were once part of Maastricht's defenses. You will find a completely different story in the St. Peter's Mountain Caves. These vast passages were formed by centuries of marl mining.

Sights around the Sint-Pietersberg

You don't have to stay in the city center for beautiful sights. On the south side of Maastricht lies the Sint-Pietersberg, where nature and history blend surprisingly well.

Atop the mountain lies Fort Sint Pieter, which was once built to defend Maastricht. Further on, you look out over the former ENCI quarry, where nature has slowly reclaimed the terrain.

Prefer something with a drink? The Apostelhoeve is situated on the slopes of the Louwberg. Here, grapes grow amidst the green landscape of South Limburg. Suddenly, the outskirts of Maastricht feel very different from the historic city center.

Besides the major monuments, it is precisely the unexpected places that make Maastricht so fun to discover. Take, for example, the Bisschopsmolen, where the waterwheel still turns and grain is ground for bread and Limburg flan, among other things.

On the north side of the city center lies the Bassin, a historic inner harbor surrounded by old industrial buildings and terraces. There is also plenty to discover for lovers of a good glass. Dive into the historic wine cellars of Wijnhuis Thiessen or discover Maastricht's beer history at Brouwerij Bosch.

Sights in the area

Do you have a bit more time? Then you can easily explore the surrounding area from Maastricht. On the south side of the city lies Hoogenweerth Castle, hidden on a green estate along the Meuse.

For a completely different piece of history, cross the Belgian border. Fort Eben-Emael played an important role at the beginning of the Second World War and consists of bunkers, gun turrets, and kilometers of underground tunnels.

Had enough of churches, forts, and historic facades for now? Then there are various museums in Maastricht to explore further indoors. Admire old and contemporary art at the Bonnefanten, discover the history of the city at the Maastricht Museum, or travel back millions of years in time at the Natural History Museum.

Sights in Maastricht with children

Visiting Maastricht with children? A guided tour through dark caves, searching for optical illusions, or simply enjoying the outdoors: there are plenty of places that will make more than just adults happy. For an active day, for example, you can visit Fun Valley Maastricht, and for younger children, Speeltuin Fort Willem is a fun place to climb, clamber, and play.
